Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 3 small/medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of sea salt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for tossing apples)
Pastry
- 1 puff pastry sheet (thawed)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing border)
Finishing
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional, for glazing)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the tart.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: Peel and slice the apples very thinly. In a small bowl, toss the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt until well combined and evenly coated.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on the parchment. Using a sharp knife, gently score a one-inch border around the edges of the pastry without cutting all the way through. This scoring allows the edges to puff up and contain the juices inside.
- Dock Pastry and Brush Border: Use a fork to poke holes in the center of the puff pastry within the scored border to prevent excessive rising. Brush the exposed one-inch border with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter to help it turn golden and crisp.
- Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the sliced apples on top of the puff pastry inside the scored border. You can organize the apples in three even rows or any creative pattern you prefer.
- Bake Tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry edges are golden brown and puffed. Check after 15 minutes and then monitor every 2 minutes to avoid burning.
- Glaze and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven. If desired, warm the honey for about 15 seconds in the microwave to thin it, then gently brush it over the top of the apples for a shiny glaze. Allow the tart to cool for several minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Make sure to thaw puff pastry completely before using to ensure even baking and puffing.
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Fuji for a balance of sweetness and tartness.
- Optional honey glaze adds a beautiful shine and extra sweetness but can be skipped for a less sweet version.
- Scoring the edges and docking the center of the pastry is key for perfect puff pastry rise and to contain juices.
- Serve slightly warm or at room temperature for best flavor and texture.
