Description

Oven Braised Beer Brats with Caramelized Onions is a comforting and flavorful dish featuring juicy bratwurst sausages slow-cooked in beer and topped with sweet, caramelized onions. This recipe combines simple ingredients with a straightforward cooking process to create a delicious meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausages and Liquid

  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 cup beer (lager or ale)

Onions and Seasonings

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the bratwurst.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, seasoning them with salt and pepper, and cook for about 15-20 minutes until they become soft, golden brown, and caramelized, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Prepare Bratwurst: While the onions are cooking, arrange the bratwurst sausages in a baking dish and pour the beer evenly over them to infuse rich flavor during baking.
  4. Add Caramelized Onions: Once the onions are perfectly caramelized, spread them evenly on top of the bratwurst in the baking dish.
  5. Cover and Bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil to trap steam and bake the bratwurst and onions in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sausages to cook through.
  6. Brown the Bratwurst: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes until the bratwurst are nicely browned, giving them a beautiful color and slightly crispy exterior.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve the beer braised bratwurst hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired for a pop of color and freshness.

Notes

  • You can use either lager or ale beer based on your preference; each imparts a distinct flavor profile.
  • Make sure to cook the onions slowly and stir frequently to achieve the best caramelization without burning.
  • Use a baking dish that fits the bratwurst snugly to keep the cooking even and the sausages moist.
  • If you prefer extra browning, you can broil the bratwurst for 1-2 minutes after baking but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Fresh parsley garnish adds a fresh touch but can be omitted if unavailable.
