Description

A rich and creamy mushroom sauce perfect for elevating your steak dinner. This recipe features sautéed cremini or portobello mushrooms in a luscious blend of heavy cream, butter, and beef broth, finished with fresh herbs and soy sauce for a savory depth of flavor. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s an elegant yet simple sauce to impress your guests or enjoy a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 8 oz fresh cremini or portobello mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Liquids & Seasonings

  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh herbs (parsley and/or thyme), chopped

Instructions

  1. Prep: Clean and slice the mushrooms uniformly for even cooking. Mince the garlic finely to release full flavor during sautéing. This step should take about 5 minutes.
  2. Sauté: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about 7 minutes until the mushrooms are golden brown and have released their moisture.
  3. Build: Pour in the low-sodium beef broth and heavy cream. Stir well to combine all the ingredients and create a smooth sauce base. Let it cook for 2 minutes to start thickening.
  4. Finish: Season the sauce with soy sauce and add the fresh chopped herbs. Stir in a final tablespoon of butter to enrich the sauce. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to a creamy consistency. Adjust seasoning to taste before serving.

Notes

  • Use cremini mushrooms for a milder flavor or portobello for a meatier texture.
  • Low-sodium beef broth helps control the saltiness, especially with soy sauce added.
  • Fresh herbs like parsley or thyme enhance the flavor, but dried can be substituted if necessary (use about 1 tsp).
  • To make the sauce dairy-free, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and butter with a plant-based alternative, but this will change the flavor profile.
  • This mushroom sauce pairs excellently with grilled or pan-seared steaks as well as roasted meats and vegetables.
