Ingredients
Scale
Meatballs
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 egg
- ½ cup seasoned bread crumbs
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Sauce
- 2 cups pasta sauce (or marinara sauce)
Subs
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 4 tablespoons garlic butter
- 1 cup shredded Italian cheese blend (or mozzarella or provolone)
Instructions
- Prepare Meatballs: In a bowl, combine lean ground beef, egg, seasoned bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything thoroughly to create your meatball mixture.
- Form and Bake Meatballs: Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes or until fully cooked through and browned.
- Simmer Meatballs in Sauce: Transfer the cooked meatballs to a saucepan and pour over the pasta or marinara sauce. Cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld and meatballs to stay tender.
- Prepare Rolls: While the meatballs simmer, spread garlic butter evenly inside each hoagie roll. Place rolls under the broiler and toast until the insides are golden and fragrant, approximately 3 minutes.
- Assemble Subs: Arrange the toasted rolls in a 9×13 baking dish. Place four meatballs inside each roll, spoon over some of the sauce, and sprinkle with the shredded Italian cheese blend.
- Broil to Melt Cheese: Return the assembled subs to the broiler and broil for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot, with extra sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
Notes
- You can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- For gluten-free diets, use gluten-free bread crumbs and rolls.
- Make sure to not overbake the meatballs to keep them moist and tender.
- Use fresh garlic butter or make your own by mixing softened butter with minced garlic and parsley for more flavor.
- These subs can be assembled ahead of time and briefly reheated before serving.
