Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups cooked rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown rice)
Optional Toppings and Vegetables
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced cucumber
- Kimchi
- Pickled vegetables
- Bell peppers
- Carrots
- Broccoli
- Spinach
- Fried egg (for added richness)
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water in a pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes until the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
- Alternate Rice Cooking Methods: Alternatively, use a rice cooker by adding rinsed rice and water, then cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For an Instant Pot, combine rinsed rice and water in the pot, seal the lid, and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes followed by a natural release.
- Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks, and brown until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Aromatics: Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant to release their flavors into the meat.
- Season the Beef: Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the mixture to simmer for a couple of minutes so the flavors meld perfectly.
- Assemble the Bowl: Spoon a generous portion of the cooked rice into each bowl, top with the seasoned ground beef mixture, and add any optional vegetables or toppings such as sesame seeds, sliced cucumber, kimchi, pickled vegetables, or a fried egg for extra richness and texture.
Notes
- Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version.
- Ground beef with 80/20 fat ratio offers the best flavor and texture.
- Feel free to add your favorite vegetables either sautéed or fresh to customize your bowl.
- Cooking rice in a rice cooker or Instant Pot saves time and ensures perfectly cooked rice every time.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Top with a fried egg for added protein and a rich, creamy texture.
