Description

This Brown Butter Onion Boil recipe features sweet onions that are boiled until tender, filled with rich brown butter, and finished with a flavorful seasoning blend. Optionally roasted to deepen the flavors, this dish combines simple ingredients to elevate the natural sweetness of onions, making it a perfect side or vegetarian main.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions

  • 4 large sweet onions, peeled and ends trimmed

Butter and Oil

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (½ tablespoon per onion)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Seasoning

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (used as seasoning/sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) if you choose to roast the onions later.
  2. Prepare Onions: Scoop out the top center of each onion about one-third of the way down to create a hollow well for the filling.
  3. Boil Onions: Boil the onions in a large pot of water for 20 minutes or until they are slightly tender but still hold their shape. Drain and let them cool slightly.
  4. Add Butter: Place ½ tablespoon of unsalted butter into the well of each onion.
  5. Season: Mix olive oil, salt, and soy sauce together and drizzle this mixture evenly over each onion.
  6. Fill Wells: Spoon additional soy sauce into the wells of the onions for enhanced flavor, if preferred.
  7. Optional Roasting: Wrap each onion individually in foil and roast in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes until fully tender, then broil for 2–3 minutes to achieve a golden top.
  8. Serve: Spoon any buttery juices collected in the foil over the onions before serving for extra richness.

Notes

  • Using sweet onions enhances the natural sweetness when cooked.
  • Roasting is optional but adds depth and caramelization to the flavor.
  • Soy sauce adds umami; you may substitute with tamari for gluten-free.
  • Be careful not to over-boil to keep the onions intact.
  • Butter can be browned before adding for richer flavor.
